Vol. 240 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Trade.

15.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will indicate the outlook for the cattle trade for the remainder of this year.

Cattle prices recently have been at record high levels and, so far as can be judged at this early stage, the outlook for the cattle trade generally during the remainder of the year appears reasonably satisfactory. The volume of exports to Britain, on the hoof or in carcase form, should be at about the same level in 1969 as in 1968. It is expected that the US market will continue to provide an adequate outlet for manufacturing-quality beef but exports of cattle and beef to EEC countries will no doubt still be affected by the heavy levies and duties on imports into those countries.
