Vol. 240 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Eel Processing Plant.

23.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether he has received any proposals for the development of an eel processing plant in Kenmare, County Kerry; if so, the present position; and whether he is prepared to grant licences for eel fishing and for the extension of the season to facilitate such a proposed development.

No definite proposals in this connection have been received in my Department.

Licences for eel fishing are obtainable from boards of fishery conservators. Eel fishing authorisations, issuable by my Department, are required by law for the operation of certain types of eel fishing engines and the conditions under which such an authorisation would be issued have been duly explained to the promoters of the project to which the Deputy refers.

As already intimated to the Kerry Board of Conservators, I am prepared to consider the extension of the open season for eel fishing in the Kerry fishery district.
