Vol. 240 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kells (Meath) Telephone Exchange.

12.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he proposes to have the telephone exchange at Kells, County Meath, changed over to automatic working.

Ceanannus Mór is included among the exchanges which it is planned to convert to automatic working during the next five years. A site for the exchange building has not yet been secured and it would be premature at this stage to forecast when the conversion will be effected.

Can the Minister say if any progress has been made towards acquiring a site at Kells and if, in fact, he can give me any idea how soon in the five-year programme it will be possible to have the Kells exchange?

I would not be able to say how soon we will be able to establish the exchange but a site has been chosen which is local authority property and arrangements are now in hand for extinguishing a right of way. When that right of way has been extinguished the site will be acquired and we can go ahead with the plan.

Will the Minister agree that there is no site problem or planning problem in Kells?

There is no site problem now.

Then we can look forward to having early attention given to the problem in Kells?

The exchanges are done in rotation each year. If the Deputy reads the notes I provided during the course of the Estimate he will see the planning of the exchanges in a general way.

I am wondering if it is under "C" or "K".
