Vol. 240 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physical Education.

31.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider the provision of a physical education college for the training of physical education instructors.

I am at the present time considering, in conjunction with the Higher Education Authority, the provision for teacher training including teachers of physical education, in this country. This includes the provision of a physical education college for the training of teachers of physical education. I am not yet in a position, however, to go into greater detail about the matter.

May I ask the Minister to expedite the provision for such a college because of the fact that many of our young physical training teachers must go abroad to become qualified? I realise that the Minister understands the position, but I would ask him to take a deep interest in the matter in view of the great hardship that is caused to these young people.

I agree with Deputy Foley and I recognise this lack, but I contemplate a college for physical education in the new higher education institute in Limerick.
