Vol. 240 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alleviation of Rates.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state with reference to the commission set up to inquire into the alleviation of the rates burden (a) how often it sat, (b) its members, (c) when it expects to make a report and (d) if it will issue an interim report.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 19 and 20 of 15th May, 1968. The inter-departmental committee set up to investigate the present system of local finance and taxation has issued three interim reports, the third of which was published in July, 1968. The draft of a fourth interim report, dealing with State assistance to local authorities, has reached an advanced stage.

The committee consists of personnel from the Departments of Agriculture and Fisheries, Education, Finance and Local Government.
