Vol. 240 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Blind Schoolchildren.

18.

asked the Minister for Education if he has given any consideration to the provision of a service whereby blind children could be collected from their homes for school and returned in the afternoon on the same lines as the service already in existence for handicapped children, in view of the desirability of keeping blind children with their families as much as possible; and if it is proposed to provide such a service.

I have had no application for the provision of daily school transport from their homes for pupils of the schools for the blind. Because the education of blind children is continuous throughout the entire day and is not confined to the classroom, the parents appreciate that the out of school activities for recreation and study provided by the schools is an essential part of their training in mobility and self-reliance. I am, therefore, satisfied that it is in the best interests of these children that they should be in residential schools.
