Vol. 240 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Estates.

61.

asked the Minister for Lands the date on which the Land Commission acquired the Cregg Castle Estates Limited, Corrandalla, County Galway; and when these lands will be allotted to the local congests.

Possession of an area of 78 acres on this estate came to the Land Commission in February, 1968. Pending completion of the necessary inquiries on the ground it is not possible to forecast just now when a scheme of division may be formulated.

62.

asked the Minister for Lands the names, locations and sizes of all estates owned by the Land Commission in County Galway which have not yet been allotted.

63.

asked the Minister for Lands the estates allotted by the Land Commission in County Galway in each of the past five years; and the size of each estate.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 62 and 63 together.

Land Commission activities in County Galway are heavily concentrated and involve numerous estates and holdings. Many of the properties are of modest size and include remnants of Congested Districts Board estates, lands surrendered by migrants and small residues of partly allotted estates. The Deputy will appreciate that the extraction of the detailed information sought in these questions would entail a disproportionate expenditure of time and labour which would not be warranted. Moreover, as regards lands in the possession of the Land Commission for distribution, the position is subject to constant fluctuation depending on progress in intake and allotment—and the extensive information sought, even if staff were to be diverted specially to extract it, would be out of date within a short time.

In the circumstances. perhaps, it would meet the Deputy's requirements to know that at 31st March, 1969, the Land Commission had on hands in County Galway an aggregate area of approximately 6,700 acres of arable land to be used for land settlement in the county.

Particulars of the acreage of lands allotted by the Land Commission in County Galway in each of the past five financial years are contained in a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the Statement:
