Vol. 240 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fire Prevention Arrangements.

55.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the very severe losses and wastage caused by fires recently; and whether with a view to the prevention of industrial fires in the future he will bring to the notice of new industrial proposers the necessity for adequate fire prevention arrangements.

I am aware of the losses and wastage caused by recent fires. In so far as new factories or industrial buildings are concerned, the local authority requirements are designed to secure that adequate fire prevention measures are incorporated in the structures. Where such buildings are grant-aided the consulting architects to An Foras Tionscal satisfy themselves that the local authority requirements are complied with.

Is the Minister aware that that is not much good if the local authority do not turn on the water as happened in the case of the one on the Naas Road?

I am aware that that allegation was made. I do not know what the facts are.

I only heard it all round the place.

Is there no Fine Gael Deputy for County Dublin?

It is the Minister's responsibility to look after that area, one that he has completely abdicated.

Who is the chairman of Dublin County Council?

Who is the vice-chairman of Dublin County Council?

The remaining questions will appear on to-morrow's Order Paper.
