Vol. 240 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Information Bureau.

4.

asked the Taoiseach if he has any details of the increase in staff in the Government Information Bureau; and whether a more extended role is envisaged for the bureau in future.

In recent months, the staff of the Government Information Bureau has been increased by the addition of two assistant directors, one staff officer and two clerical assistants. This increase in staff is intended to implement a scheme which I have initiated for a more comprehensive service in dealing with the press, including special provision for the provincial press, and with the radio and television media.

This obviously envisages a far more extended role for the Government Information Bureau. Will this have any international connotations? Does the Taoiseach envisage the Government Information Bureau having any correspondence abroad or anything like that?

The Government Information Bureau will service inquiries from abroad, but its main purpose is to serve our own people in the flow of information between the Government and the public.
