Vol. 240 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Disabled Ex-Servicemen.

39.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider reserving some civilian employment in military barracks for disabled ex-servicemen.

The position with regard to the employment of ex-servicemen generally is that, to such extent as may be compatible with the public interest, men who have had not less than five years service in Na Buan Óglaigh are, during a period of two years after completing their Army service, granted a preference, equally with men who rendered military service in the period 1916 to 1923 and who had been granted active or general service medals, for subordinate employment in or under my Department.

Subject to the foregoing, and provided his disability does not preclude him from the efficient discharge of the duties of the post he is seeking, any disabled ex-serviceman is eligible for consideration for employment on an equal footing with others.

A number of disabled ex-servicemen have, in fact, obtained employment under my Department but the Deputy will appreciate that the scope for such employment is rather limited.
