The 1957 figures include temporary classes (mainly Scale-payment Sub-Postmasters, Branch Managers of Employment Exchanges and certain part-time employees) whose estimated total number is 2,700 at most and who are excluded from the Census from 1959 onwards. The 1969 figures are provisional.
