Vol. 241 No. 1

Death of Member: Expression of Sympathy.

Cúis mhór bróin do chomhaltaí an Tí seo bás an Teachta Seán Ó Duinn an tseachtain seo caite — go raibh síocháin síorraí i láthair Dé aige.

One of the outstanding and colourful personalities of Irish public life Seán Dunne was universally popular, with colleagues and political opponents alike, both inside and outside the House. It was characteristic of him that, even though in indifferent health, he should have fought the recent election campaign with the customary zeal and enthusiasm which he had displayed in the various elections he had contested since the year 1948.

An eloquent debater, who could be most trenchant in his criticism, his contributions to our proceedings here were always well-informed and frequently interspersed with the amusing witticism and the humorous aside. The quality of his energy and of his capacities was shown by his increasing reputation as a playwright, author and journalist.

Recurring illness in recent years in no way lessened his zest for political life. Unselfishly, he continued to the end to give to public service all the strength and vigour which he possessed.

Through his untimely death his party has suffered a severe loss. His constituents have lost a most dedicated Dáil representative in whose interests he was a devoted and untiring champion.

I ask you, a Cheann Comhairle, to convey to the late Deputy's widow and mother and to the other members of his family the sincere sympathy of every Member of the House. Guímid cabhair Dé dóibh ina gcaill.
