Vol. 241 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Accidents.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there has been any drop in the number of road accidents consequent upon the introduction of the 60 mph limit last April; and, if so, if he will give the relevant statistics.

Accident statistics for the months of April and May and provisional statistics for the month of June indicate that there has been a drop in the number of road accidents since the introduction of the 60 mph general speed limit on 1st April, 1969, as compared with the corresponding three months last year.

However, it is not possible on the basis of the figures so far available to say if the general speed limit has had a decisive influence. An Foras Forbartha is maintaining a continuing study on the subject but I do not think that significant figures will be available until after the end of September.
