Vol. 241 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Discussions with West German Minister.

28.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he will report to the Dáil on the discussions held with the West German Defence Minister on the occasion of his recent visit to this country; and whether Ireland's membership of NATO was discussed.

Dr. Schröeder, Federal German Minister of Defence, made a private visit to Ireland last month in the course of which he paid a courtesy call on my predecessor. NATO was not discussed.

Will the Minister state whether any form of military commitment or the utilisation of bases was discussed and, if not, what else could have been discussed with the Minister for Defence?

I have stated that NATO was not discussed. The call was a courtesy one. It was a private visit and I do not think the discussion was of a business nature in any form.
