Vol. 241 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Primary Teachers.

114.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of primary teachers; and the percentage of these (a) trained and (b) untrained.

The total number of primary teachers serving during the school-year 1967-68 was 14,732.

Of these, 89.5 per cent or 13,187 were trained teachers and 10.5 per cent or 1,545 untrained. All of the latter who are under 56 years of age are, through attendance at courses, being given an opportunity of reaching trained teacher status.

Can the Minister tell us whether this is an increasing or a decreasing proportion of untrained to trained?

The Deputy may not be aware of the fact that since 1958 no untrained teachers have been recruited.

115.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of primary teachers who are members of religious orders; and the numbers of these who are (a) trained and (b) untrained.

The total number of primary teachers who were members of religious orders during the schoolyear 1967-68 was 2,869.

Of these, 2,338 were trained teachers and 531 untrained. Many of the latter are young nuns or brothers who serve in an untrained capacity for a few years before entering training colleges.
