Vol. 241 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Sandymount Strand (Dublin) Retaining Wall.

47.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he is aware that a delegation from Sandymount Residents' Association was told last Monday by the Dublin City Manager that the Dublin Port and Docks Board has failed, despite repeated pressure from the corporation to carry out its undertakings to build a retaining wall of dry filling around its newly reclaimed area on Sandymount Strand; and whether in view of the consequent pollution of the Strand he will take steps to enforce the immediate carrying out of this undertaking by the Dublin Port and Docks Board.

I presume that the question relates to an embankment facing an area being reclaimed south of Pigeon House Road.

I am informed by the Dublin Port and Docks Board that they arranged with Dublin Corporation to construct an embankment stage by stage in advance of filling in by the corporation in the area in question. As part of this arrangement it was agreed with the corporation that as and when the corporation tipping extended past the end of the embankment the board would face the filling with dry filling. The board state that the necessity to carry out this facing work has not yet arisen as the line of corporation filling has not yet reached the end of the embankment.

In view, however, of the uncertainty which appears to have arisen in the matter, I propose to seek the corporation's observations with a view to resolving the problem.
