Vol. 241 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birmingham-Shannon Air Service.

60.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether Aer Lingus have any plans to introduce a scheduled service between Birmingham and Shannon; and, if not, why.

I am informed by Aer Lingus that they are satisfied that a Birmingham-Shannon service would not be economic at present. The company are, however, keeping the matter under review.

Can the Minister say whether or not any recent examination into the feasibility of introducing such a scheme has been carried out by Aer Lingus?

Yes, they are looking at it very closely. As the Deputy is aware, they are providing a good service between Birmingham and Shannon through the Dublin connection but a direct run is a matter which is continually analysed. Certainly, if the profitability aspect is good, this would be done. It is a question of profitability.
