Vol. 241 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Monaghan Factory.

75.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give details on the proposed new factory for Clones, County Monaghan.

Apart from an undertaking which commenced production in Clones recently, I am aware of four proposals for the establishment of new industries or the extension of existing industries in this town. Three of these are proposals submitted under the small industries programme. The total employment expected from these operations, at full production, is 298. As industrial proposals must be treated as confidential, I cannot give further details.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary tell us the position as regards the proposed container factory which already has advertised in the local papers for staff and fitters? There is a substantial rumour that it may not develop any further. Is that correct?

I am not familiar with newspaper reports in the Monaghan area. I am afraid I cannot give any view.

Would it happen to be an election stunt?

There are four proposals for the establishment of new industries or the extension of existing industries. Three come under the heading of small industries and details of the fourth cannot be given.

I am not unduly worried about newspaper reports. Can we assume from the Parliamentary Secretary's reply that the proposed container factory will go ahead, will develop and materialise?

I have no knowledge whatsoever of the proposed container factory.

There never was one.

Can we take it that it was an election container stunt?
