Vol. 241 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Career Guidance.

110.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that in the Seanad on 20th June, 1968, his predecessor stated that he hoped that a comprehensive document on career guidance then in preparation would be published within the following twelve months; why this document is not yet published; what stage its preparation has reached; and when it will appear.

The information on career guidance referred to by my predecessor in the Seanad on June 20th, 1968, was to a large degree included in the booklet Ár ndaltaí uile. This was done as it was considered that a booklet on the vocational aspect alone of student guidance would be valueless for parents, unless the basic facts of our educational system were also made available.

With regard to the projection of job opportunities, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his previous question on July 17th last.

Would the Minister indicate why this promise has not been kept?

What the Minister did in fact say was: "which he hoped would be published." That hope has not yet materialised.
