Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Strength.

129.

asked the Minister for Justice the present strength of the Garda Síochána and the numbers in each rank at the last convenient date.

130.

asked the Minister for Justice the present strength of the Garda Síochána; and if it is proposed to continue recruitment at the present rate.

With your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 129 and 130 together.

The total strength of the Garda Síochána on the 30th September, 1969, was 6,533.

The strength of the various ranks is in the form of a tabular statement, which, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I will have circulated with the Official Report.

The rate of recruitment in the future will depend on two factors, firstly, the number of vacancies arising as a result of retirements, etc., and secondly, the approved strength of the force. The strength will be determined as a result of the general review, at present in progress, of the organisation of the force.
