Vol. 241 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Listowel (Kerry) Old Folks Home.

11.

asked the Minister for Health if an application has been received from the committee of the old folks home in Listowel, County Kerry, for a grant; and if so, what is the extent of the grant available.

No proposals have been submitted to my Department regarding the making available of financial assistance towards the cost of providing a home for the aged at Listowel.

There are no funds available from which a direct grant can be provided by me towards the cost of such projects. Health authorities are empowered, however, under section 65 of the Health Act, 1953, to give assistance, subject to Ministerial approval, to any voluntary agency which is providing accommodation of approved standards and meeting needs which otherwise would fall to be met by health authorities. The usual contribution towards capital costs is within a limit of £600 for each place reserved for persons to be sent by such health authorities to the homes. A contribution is made available from Exchequer sources towards the expenditure incurred by health authorities in assisting voluntary agencies who comply with requirements.
