Vol. 241 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Pollution Danger.

8.

asked the Minister for Health whether he considers that he should issue a public warning about the danger of eating dead or contaminated fish from polluted rivers; and if in the interests of public health he will encourage health authorities to take more effective action against all persons responsible for river and water pollution.

I do not consider that the issue by me of a general public warning, as suggested by the Deputy, is called for. In the case of incidents affecting a particular district, it would be a matter for the chief medical officer of the area to issue a warning if he considered that circumstances warranted it.

In relation to water pollution, the appropriate local authorities are the local sanitary authorities and I would refer the Deputy to a reply given by the Minister for Local Government on the 23rd October to his question regarding pollution.

Is the Minister aware that some poor Dublin families have recently eaten fish from the polluted waters of the Dodder and would the Minister consider making representations in the matter to the Dublin Health Authority, seeing that members of the Dublin Corporation are no longer permitted to exercise their functions on that authority?
