Vol. 241 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Government Inspections.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange for the speeding up of inspections throughout the country as many people cannot get grants paid or loans advanced until houses are passed by his Department and they cannot start work on new houses, reconstruction of houses, bathroom and toilet extensions, and water and sewerage installations until his Department inspector makes out an estimate and allocates the grant.

I am conscious of the desirability of reducing to the minimum delays associated with housing grant inspections and I have been taking steps towards this end. I would, however, like to point out that the position is affected by the remarkable increase in recent years in the volume of grant applications. In 1966-67, for example, 21,340 grants were allocated. Last year the total was 31,628 and the rate of allocations has risen still further in the current year.
