Vol. 241 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Added Value Tax.

39.

asked the Minister for Finance whether in view of the fact that the five Common Market countries are changing over to TVA by 1st January next year, the Government have as yet taken any decision on the introduction of this system here.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance whether accession to the EEC by this country would require the abolition of turnover tax and its substitution by an added value tax; and if he will give the result of any investigations into this matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 39 and 40 together.

My information is that, of the six EEC countries, only four will have adopted the TVA by the 1st January, 1970. The whole question of the adoption of an added-value tax in Ireland is under examination, including the requirements in relation to it for purposes of membership of the EEC; but no decision has yet been taken. I should like to invite the Deputies' attention to the White Paper in this connection which was laid before each House of the Oireachtas in June of last year.
