Vol. 242 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Temporary Court Stenographers.

59.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that temporary court stenographers have received no increase in remuneration since 1964; and if he will now see that their rates of remuneration are suitably revised.

I assume that the question refers to outside stenographers who are engaged casually as required in the courts on a daily fee basis plus transcription fees.

The State's responsibility for the recording of evidence is confined to the Central Criminal Court, criminal trials in the Circuit Court and Chancery actions in the High Court. This work is normally done by permanent stenographers attached to my Department, and casual stenographers are engaged to supplement the permanent staff as required. In all other instances arrangements for the recording of evidence are entirely a matter for the parties.

I have received no representations that the present rates for casual stenographers employed by my Department are inadequate. These rates are in fact the same as the fees allowable for taxation purposes under the Rules of the Superior Courts.
