Vol. 242 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Effects of DDT.

8.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is having studies conducted as to the effects which residues of DDT pesticides in foodstuffs may have on human beings; if so, the nature and extent of such studies; and if, having regard to recent American discoveries of the deleterious effects of DDT, he will make a statement on the matter.

In September last, I requested the reconstituted food advisory committee to advise as a matter of priority on the controls required in relation to residues in food of pesticides and insecticides, including DDT.

The committee will, in this connection, examine all the available evidence as to the effects of the ingestion of such residues on human beings and they are empowered to have such investigations and tests carried out as they may consider necessary for their work.

The recommendations of the committee, when received, will be given careful consideration and any action which will become necessary as a consequence of their findings will be duly announced.

As very serious consequences have been discovered elsewhere, would the Minister urge upon the committee the necessity for expedition in their examination and recommendations?

I shall pass on the Deputy's comment. Personally, I consider that expedition is desirable.
