Vol. 242 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Judicial Appointments.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement concerning the reports that the Government may allow solicitors to be appointed judges in the Circuit Court and may allow them to have audience in the High Court and Supreme Court.

The Government are at present examining my detailed proposals for a courts Bill to provide for increases in the civil jurisdiction of the district and circuit courts and other related matters. These proposals include a recommendation to allow solicitors to be appointed judges of the circuit court and to give them a right of audience in the Superior Courts.

Would it require legislation?

Yes, I think it does.

Does the Minister propose introducing such legislation in the near future?

Yes, that proposal is before the Government.
