96.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the difficulties posed for post-primary schools by the recent announcement of forthcoming changes in the matriculation regulations of the National University of Ireland as a result of which many schools will have to make timetable and subject changes with consequent mid-term disruption of the programmes of teachers and students; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

101.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that his Department's new leaving certificate subjects, economic history, business organisation and accountancy, all of which replace commerce, have not been accepted as matriculation subjects by the National University of Ireland although three of them are accepted in Trinity College; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A Cheann Comhairle, with your permission I propose to take Questions 93 to 101 together.

The position is that the National University of Ireland has decided with effect from 1971 not to include certain subjects of the leaving certificate course in the matriculation course. No reason has been given for the exclusion of any of these subjects.

Many of the subjects concerned have been accepted for the purpose of the TCD entrance examination.

I have discussed the matter with representatives of the schools and it has been decided that a joint deputation from the schools and my Department should seek interviews with representatives of the Senate of National University of Ireland and of the Board of Trinity College. I consider, therefore, that I should say nothing further on the matter at present.
