Vol. 242 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Incorrect Examination Papers.

109.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that in the day vocational examination in mathematics (Paper I) held at the Municipal Technical Institute, Limerick on 11th June, 1969, candidates who had followed the new mathematics course were given papers based on the old syllabus while candidates who had studied the old syllabus were given the new mathematics paper; whether he investigated this error and with what result; what steps were taken to ensure that candidates will not suffer as a result of it; why a public statement was not issued so as to allay anxiety among the candidates and their parents; and what steps he proposes to take to prevent a repetition of this error.

I am aware that Mathematics (Paper I) for the Certificate Examinations for Day Vocational Courses, 1969, was incorrectly distributed to some candidates at the centre in the Limerick Technical Institute. I had special arrangements made concerning the assessment of these candidates' exercises and I am satisfied that these arrangements have ensured that the candidates have not suffered as a result of taking the incorrect question-paper.

I do not consider that a public statement in the matter was called for.
