Vol. 242 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limits.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange with the appropriate authorities for the imposition of a speed limit at the village of Newcastle, County Dublin.

The village of Newcastle is amongst the areas where the speed limits are being revised by me at present.

Would the Minister say how long it is since an application reached his Department for a speed limit for Newcastle?

I received a request from the area some time ago.

Some considerable time ago?

Fairly considerable. I would say I got it before the Deputy.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that, although an overall 60 mph limit was introduced six months ago, signs at the exits from towns still indicate the termination of speed limits; why this is so; and what he proposes to do about it.

When the general speed limit of 60 mph was introduced, care was taken by publicity to emphasise that the sign in question merely indicates the end of built-up or special speed limit areas and that the general speed limit applies on the remainder of the road system. I am satisfied that no further action on this matter is called for.
