Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Road.

45.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will take steps to have the entrance road to the boating terminal and public house at Twelfth Lock, Lucan, County Dublin maintained properly and access by motorists assured at all times.

I am informed by CIE that the maintenance of this roadway, which is a narrow unsurfaced cul-de-sac along the canal bank, is not their sole responsibility, some repair work being undertaken by property owners and lease-holders who have a right of way along the bank. The board does not obstruct access on the roadway. CIE state that, having regard to the traffic, the roadway is in reasonable condition.

I am also informed by CIE that Dublin County Council have expressed an interest in taking this roadway in charge. CIE have agreed in principle to this and the necessary legal steps to effect the transfer are in train.

I wonder is the Minister aware of the conditions sought by CIE in the take-over of this road by the county council? CIE laid down conditions which could not possibly be accepted by any local authority and this is the reason for the long delay. This has been going on for over three years.

I am not so aware.

It is a very important point. I do not know if the Minister is aware that most of the boats are now lowered at this point because of the difficulty in passing through all the locks from the city to the 12th lock.

I will draw the attention of the Minister to what the Deputy says.
