Vol. 242 No. 9

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lending of Works of Art.

70.

asked the Minister for Education whether the governors and guardians of the National Gallery of Ireland have been requested to lend works of art for display in the Houses of the Oireachtas; whether any such are now displayed; if so, where and what; if it is proposed to display further works; and, if so, where.

I understand that a request has recently been made to the board of governors and guardians of the National Gallery for a loan of pictures for display in the Houses of the Oireachtas.

This request will be considered in the near future by the board, who, as custodians of the pictures, have the sole right to decide matters relating to such loans.

71.

asked the Minister for Education the number, whereabouts and title of works of art lent by the National Gallery of Ireland pursuant to section 1 of the National Gallery of Ireland Act, 1963.

I understand that the board of governors and guardians of the National Gallery have loaned paintings to many institutions of the State.

The Deputy will no doubt appreciate that the board is an autonomous body and that in relation to details of its operations it would be appropriate that he should address any inquiry direct to the board.
