Vol. 242 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Authority Nurses.

2.

asked the Minister for Health how many married nurses in the service of health authorities have been employed for periods of more than six months (a) in the Dublin area and (b) in the provinces.

The information is not available in my Department and is being sought. If the Deputy will repeat the question in about three weeks I hope to be able to supply the required particulars.

3.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that nurses employed in the service of health authorities before marriage must in most cases, if they again enter the service of the authorities after marriage, enter the salary scale at a point which does not give full credit for previous service; and if he will take steps to ensure that full credit is given in such cases.

Standard practice in the local service is that a temporary officer is paid at the minimum of the appropriate salary scale. In deference to local recruitment difficulties, a departure from this practice has been authorised whereby a married nurse who takes up a temporary appointment in a health authority hospital enters at the minimum of the salary scale on appointment but is granted an increment in respect of each completed year of satisfactory service thereafter. Present indications are that an extension of this concession is not warranted, but I will keep the situation under review.
