Vol. 242 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lough Corrib Fish Restocking.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if in view of the serious damage caused to fish life by disease on Lough Corrib he will state what steps he proposes to take to restock the Lough.

This matter is under investigation in consultation with the Inland Fisheries Trust. If the investigation shows restocking to be necessary, this will be done.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the grave hardship which this will cause to the boatmen whose livelihood will be affected if this is not done immediately? As I see it, the Department are only fiddling while Rome is burning. That is what is happening here.

As the answer points out, the matter is the subject of consultation and, if investigation shows restocking is necessary, it will be done.

Has the case not been made by the fishermen on the Corrib that there is a necessity for this? What steps have been taken beyond consultation? The facts are there.

The matter is the subject of consultation.
