Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishery Protection.

127.

asked the Minister for Defence if he has carried out any survey of the fishery protection methods of countries similar to Ireland, particularly Iceland; and how the Icelandic methods of fishery protection compare with Irish ones.

No special survey has been carried out in relation to fishery protection methods which would be basically the same in all countries.

Information has, however, been collected in regard to the types of vessel used for fishery protection in European maritime countries, including Iceland.

In Iceland the coast guard service is responsible for fishery protection and the latest available information is that their fleet for this purpose comprises five vessels, two of which are patrol vessels, one of 1,150 tons and the second of 1,000 tons, one coastal inspection and salvage vessel of 920 tons, one lighthouse tender of 716 tons and one coast guard vessel of 200 tons.
