Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Blocking Equipment.

11.

asked the Minister for Justice if the Gardaí are provided with the necessary road blocking equipment for traffic diversion in cases of road accidents.

Garda stations and patrol cars are supplied with reflective triangles to be placed as warning of road obstructions. Equipment for the purpose of traffic diversion is not regarded as necessary by the Commissioner, as this can best be attended to by gardaí specially placed on point duty.

Is the Minister aware that in many accident cases the gardaí are powerless because they have no road blocking equipment? As a result, chaotic conditions prevail after accidents. If the gardaí were provided with this equipment they would be able to ensure more orderly flow of traffic. The gardaí are aware of their inadequacy in present conditions.

I have nothing to add to what I have said. The best method of providing for traffic diversion is to have a garda there to so divert traffic.

Question No. 12.

There is just one point——

There will be no other point: I have called Question No. 12.

The gardaí are not capable of handling traffic.
