Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Juvenile Liaison Scheme.

15.

asked the Minister for Justice the special training and selection process undergone by gardaí to enable them to work on the juvenile liaison scheme.

When vacancies occur in the juvenile liaison section interested members of the Garda Síochána are invited to apply. In filling vacancies in Dublin the Commissioner is aided by a selection board of officers who interview applicants. In country areas he is assisted by the reports and recommendations of his district and divisional officers.

Selection is made on the basis of the applicant's personal suitability and his practical interest in, and aptitude for, the type of work which arises under the juvenile liaison scheme.

The training provided for all newly appointed members of the section consists of a two-week training course in Dublin which was specially devised for the work at the commencement of the scheme.

Could the Minister not give a similar two weeks' training course for prison officers?

I have already dealt with prison officers.

That is a separate question.
