Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Ammunition.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice if people coming from Northern Ireland can buy ammunition in this country if they are the holders of gun licences in Northern Ireland; if people coming from Northern Ireland can get gun licences in the Republic; and how long they must reside here before they can do so.

The answer to the first part of the question is "No".

A person coming here on a visit from the north must obtain a firearm certificate in respect of any gun which he intends bringing in. A certificate issued to a visitor entitles him to bring in the gun and to purchase ammunition for it while he is here.

Anybody resident in the State must obtain a firearm certificate in respect of any gun in his possession. No minimum period of residence is necessary to qualify for a certificate.
