Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Anglo-Irish Free Trade Agreement.

80.

andDr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the difficulties being experienced by many industries through the operation of the Anglo Irish Free Trade Agreement; and if the provisions of Article XIX have been invoked to obviate these difficulties.

The operation of the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement as it affects industry is kept under constant review in my Department. Any difficulties which may arise for individual industries are examined with a view to seeking an appropriate solution, as provided for in the agreement, as quickly as possible.

The provisions of Article XIX of the agreement have been invoked in only one instance. This resulted in the reimposition in 1967 of the quota restrictions on imports of motor tyres to resolve difficulties which had arisen at that time.

Have there been any demands by other industries for the invoking of this article?

No, but there have been certain difficulties in other industries but these were ironed out without invoking the article.
