Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Credit Union Movement.

83.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the alleged excessive dependence of money borrowers on licensed and unlicensed money-lendrs, he has any plans on hand to encourage the growth of credit unions.

Legislation in the form of the Credit Union Act, 1966, was enacted to provide for the registration, and supervision of the activities, of credit unions.

This Act has contributed largely to the recent rapid growth of the credit union movement in this country and I expect that it will continue to be an important factor in its future development.

While I have no specific plans in hand at present for major amendments of this legislation, I will continue to examine such measures for the future development of the movements as may be recommended to me by the credit union advisory committee, which has the operation of the Act under constant review, or by other interests.

The Credit Union is doing wonderful work in the Minister's and my constituency and in other places also.

Hear, hear.

Unfortunately, not such great work in a portion of Dublin city as a "Seven Days" programme has proved.
