Vol. 243 No. 6

Written Answers. - Retraining and Resettlement Expenditure.

170.

asked the Minister for Labour the amount expended for retraining and resettlement in the period from March, 1954 to December, 1968; and the total number of workers aided.

I can only deal with the points raised in the Deputy's question in respect of (a) the period since AnCO—the industrial Training Authority—was established in May, 1967, and (b) the period since the resettlement allowances scheme came into effect in January, 1968. The State grants made available to AnCO since is was established were £250,000 in 1967-68, £450,000 in 1968-69 and £975,000 in 1969-70. It is not feasible to specify precisely the amounts expended out of these grants on retraining but the total expenditure —capital and non-capital—up to the 30th September, 1969, on the provision of training at the three centres established by AnCO at Shannon, Waterford and Galway is in the region of £410,000. The total number of trainees who completed courses at these three centres is 204: the number at present receiving training in them is 544 and the present estimated annual throughput of the three centres is about 820.

Information is not available to me on the expenditure by other bodies or by individual firms on training over the period mentioned in the question, or on the number of workers involved. The total expenditure under the resettlement allowances scheme between January, 1968 and 8th December, 1969 was £945 7s 6d and the number of workers aided was 49.
