Vol. 244 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport Authority.

32.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware of the statement of the Chairman of the Board of CIE last month that an effective overall transport authority should be created to regulate rationally the conflicting interests involved; and if he proposes to take any action in this matter.

The regulation and co-ordination of transport and of conflicting interests therein is a function of the Government now discharged by a number of Departments including my own. While there is, no doubt, scope for closer co-operation between them I do not consider that the creation of an overall transport authority either in the form of a new Department or otherwise would at present be warranted. However, I am having examined at present ways and means of securing coordination and rationalisation between the bodies concerned with freight between Ireland and Britain.
