Vol. 244 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Printing of Examination Tests.

112.

asked the Minister for Education whether it is possible to ensure that henceforth all texts prescribed for the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations will be printed in Ireland.

While every endeavour is made to have the texts for these examinations produced in Ireland, the Deputy will appreciate that such is not possible in all cases. For instance, it might in the case of a European language be necessary for educational reasons to prescribe a particular edition of a text.

I understand that, if the information about the prescribed text is made available in time, Irish publishers would be in a position to turn out these books. In those circumstances I think it is rather unfortunate that books which could be produced at home are being imported.

The Deputy can take it that the publishers will be informed in good time. In relation to some texts in European languages certain editions are for educational reasons prescribed and there would be difficulty in having them published here.
