Vol. 244 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Pedestrian Crossings.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government if Dublin Corporation will reconsider its refusal to provide a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights at the point opposite the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians on the Navan Road.

The provision of a pedestrian crossing or traffic light signals is a matter for the local authority acting at the request, or with the consent, of the Garda commissioner. It is accordingly a matter for them to review their decision in this matter.

Would the Minister give the matter favourable consideration? This is a very busy road. Deputy Tunney, Deputy Gogan and I have made representations about this.

I am aware that this is a very busy road but the position is as I have stated. It has been decided by the people concerned that it does not warrant a pedestrian crossing. It can be reviewed by them.

Is the Minister aware that there are also schools beside the church and schoolchildren pass by? Many elderly people who go to evening Mass and church services at night have great difficulty in crossing the road due to the heavy increase in vehicular traffic. Also, the road has been under repair for a considerable time to the great inconvenience of the people. It would not be a big problem to provide them with a pedestrian crossing.

I am very well aware of the position there but, as I pointed out, it is not a matter for the Minister to decide. I am very well aware of the position as regards schools and everything else as this was in my constituency for a considerable time.

Will the Minister consider increasing the amount of money available to local authorities and to Dublin Corporation in particular for pedestrian crossings as there are 80 requests on an average per year?

The question relates to one crossing not to a number of crossings.

There is no request for that.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether Dublin Corporation will make arrangements to have an investigation made into the need for a pedestrian crossing on the Naas Road, Inchicore, between Third Lock Bridge and Bluebell, Dublin.

Pedestrian crossings are provided by the local authority at the request, or with the consent, of the Garda commissioner. Accordingly, an investigation into the need for a pedestrian crossing at the location mentioned would be a matter for them.
