Vol. 245 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Moy Drainage Scheme.

51.

asked the Minister for Finance if the drainage of 1,500 acres of land left flooded in the townlands of Ballintaffy, Murneen, Townalough, Ballycarrick, Gortmara, Aughervilla and Kilcalmon rural district, Claremorris, County Mayo, will be completed under the Moy drainage scheme.

52.

asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works will under the Moy drainage scheme complete the drainage of 1,000 acres of land left flooded as a result of its being bypassed by the Moy Drainage Scheme at Balla, County Mayo.

53.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide the necessary money to the Moy drainage scheme for the 600 extra drains and bridges applied for by the landholders in the Moy catchment area of County Mayo.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 51, 52 and 53 together.

The original scheme for the Moy catchment was designed to cater for all arterial channels which could be included within reasonable limits of cost and which would be practicable from an engineering viewpoint. As the scheme progressed some 800 applications were received for work on additional drains. It was necessary to appoint a special survey team to examine these and the merits of including each in the scheme will have been carefully considered before a certificate of completion is issued.

Investigation of the applications referred to in Questions Nos. 51, 52 and 53 is not yet completed.

Is the Minister aware that if the 800 extra applications to the Moy drainage scheme are not included the people in that area will never again have a chance of getting thousands of acres of land drained? This land is not included in the scheme.

No decision has yet been made on the areas referred to in the Deputy's question.
