Vol. 245 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - ILO Conventions.

59.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will state, in respect of the proposed Hours of Work Bill and the consultative document issued thereon, if it is the intention of his Department to seek withdrawal from the ILO Convention No. 20, 1925, the provisions of which are enshrined in the Night Work (Bakeries) Act, 1936; or if it is the intention of the Government to amend the Act.

The consultative document on a proposed new Hours of Work Bill issued by my Department does not contain any proposal to amend the Night Work (Bakeries) Act, 1936.

60.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will state, in respect of the Government's Report to the ILO of 18th October 1968 concerning the Night Work (Bakeries) Convention No. 20, 1925, if, in fact, 2,095 inspections of the 499 bakeries concerning night work regulations were carried out between July 1966 and June 1968; and if he will give details of the prosecutions brought in two cases.

Inspections and prosecutions under the Night Work (Bakeries) Act, 1936, are undertaken by the gardaí who supply the relevant statistics for inclusion in the report to the ILO. I have confirmed that the figures in the Deputy's question are correct except that, due to a clerical error, the reference to 499 bakeries should be to 479 bakeries. I am informed that it is not the practice to give fresh publicity to individual prosecutions by repeating details which may have received publicity when the court proceedings were taken.
