Vol. 245 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Kiosks.

98.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider having a public telephone kiosk provided at Rooska, Bantry, County Cork, to facilitate residents of the area.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Rooska where there is no post office is not envisaged under the extended kiosk programme for rural areas.

Rooska is on the shores of Bantry Bay and is very isolated. The farmers and others in the area have great difficulty in getting in touch quickly with their doctor or priest or veterinary surgeon or anybody whom they wish to contact in a hurry. Would the Minister look into the matter again, please?

It is the easiest thing in the world to agree to look into something again. In fairness, I must say I could not offer any great prospect of the provision of a kiosk there, while I might very easily agree to look into the matter. The same problem exists in many places. With many other more needy areas to be catered for, the expected usage of a kiosk at Rooska would not at present justify its provision there.

99.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will sanction the erection of a telephone kiosk at Meelin village, Newmarket, County Cork.

The extended kiosk programme for rural areas provides for replacement of call office telephones in local post offices by street kiosks in areas where the call office telephone is used to a fair extent. Meelin village is not likely to be included in the programme as the call office telephone is little used.
