Vol. 246 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inchicore (Dublin) Road.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if Dublin Corporation have any plans for widening Inchicore Road, Dublin, in view of the traffic hazards on this road.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply on 30th October, 1969, to a question from him about this road. No proposal for widening the road has been received in my Department since then.

When I last asked this question I got an assurance from the Minister that something would be done but nothing has, in fact, been done. Would the Minister ask Dublin Corporation if they have any plans for widening the road?

I have not received the proposals from the corporation yet.

In view of what I have said about the traffic hazards on this road, perhaps, the Minister would ask them to do something?

I brought that fact to the attention of the corporation. I understand that a traffic study group considered the question and recommended that the location be examined with a view to reducing the level of the roads concerned to eliminate the existing reverse camber.

Serious accidents are ocurring at very frequent intervals on this road. Would the Minister ask the corporation to examine the road as a matter of urgency?

It is being examined by the paving engineer.

Is it not true that the standard of this particular road leading to the city of Dublin from the south is well below that of many county roads in isolated places?

Yes, I agree it is not up to a satisfactory standard in many places on the approach to Dublin.

Would the Minister consider recommending that they make it a one-way road in view of the fact that there is a highway running parallel to it?

I do not think it would be appropriate for me to make that recommendation. There is a traffic study group available to the corporation which is better qualified to make these recommendations than either the Deputy or myself.

I have been asking Dublin Corporation for the last ten years to do something about this road but nothing has been done and I am now asking the Minister for Local Government to look into it.

It is now being examined.

I was told that nearly ten years ago.

If the Deputy waits another ten years it might be done.

Meanwhile people will be killed on the road.
