Vol. 246 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each county and county borough the percentage of unemployed persons on the latest available date.

The percentage unemployed is obtained by relating the number of insured persons on the live register to the estimated currently insured population. In calculating the percentages, agriculture, fishing and private domestic service are excluded. The data required for the calculation of the percentages are available only in respect of the areas covered by each local employment office and these areas do not correspond with county boundaries. For the calculation of the percentages the offices are grouped into eight regions. With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the percentages unemployed at mid-March, 1970, in each of the eight regions.

Following is the statement:

PERCENTAGE of currently insured persons unemployed at mid-March, 1970 (excluding agriculture, fishing and private domestic service).
