Vol. 246 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pharmaceutical Samples.

21.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make an order prohibiting the dropping of pharmaceutical product samples through letterboxes on a general mass sample distribution basis in view of the danger to young children.

I am not aware of any promotion on a house to house basis of pharmaceutical products which might be dangerous. If the Deputy has any such information I would be glad to be given it.

I am informed that the Pharmaceutical and Allied Industries Adaptation Association, which is representative of the majority of the organisations in this field in this country, operate a voluntary code of standards in relation to the promotion of their products to the general public. This code, which is a quite comprehensive one, specifically precludes the house to house distribution of samples of medicines.
